Fire safety requirements are particularly stringent for retirement homes, as occupants cannot be expected to evac-uate the building. The use of combustible materials such as timber is therefore very restricted. To address these constraints, the structure is designed as a post-and-beam skeleton frame with a ribbed timber–concrete composite slab. To comply with the fire-safety regulations, the load-bearing capacity in case of a fire relies solely on the con-crete topping and the timber skeleton. This solution preserves the desired architectural expression and reduces costs.
